Live Nativity 2012

December 21, 2012 By Faith

Once again, the shepherds, goats, sheep, horses, Joseph, Mary, and the baby Jesus gathered outside Faith Lutheran Church (just off Main Street in Hutchinson) for the Live Nativity. Those who came to observe Faith Lutheran’s recreation of the well known nativity scene gathered around the stable and joined in Christmas carols. Thank you to Dave Franzen for providing the beautiful pictures!

Live Nativity on Main

December 28, 2011 By Vivid Image

Missed last week’s live Nativity at Faith Lutheran? We’ve posted a photo gallery and a video of the event. We had great attendance for the Nativity at this year’s  final Advent service, and the service ended with the singing of Christmas songs around the manger outside. Thank you to all the actors and behind-the-scenes crew who made this night so special!

Live Christmas

December 3, 2012 By Faith

As staff and leaders, part of our Advent preparation includes plans for the many ways we celebrate the birth of our Lord. This is all designed to help us reflect on this deep and powerful mystery of the Word that became flesh and lived among us. What does “The Word became flesh” really mean? I will resist a brief theological treatise and simply invite you to live it – LIVE!

“The Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have beheld his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.”

(John 1:14)

Christmas: Giving

“They offered him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.” (Matthew 2:11)

Primarily due to the story of the magi, we think of Christmas as a time of giving. And that giving takes on many forms. As you read this, Operation Christmas Child gifts are well on their way — these gifts are received by children all over the world.

Christmas: Experience

“In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus… and she gave birth to her firstborn son… and laid him in a manger. (Luke 2: 1,7)

This is a story that takes place in history. And so, we can imagine the commotion of traveling to one’s own town to be registered. There was confusion and crowds and “no place for them in the inn.” To help us imagine and experience this, there are two opportunities to experience this story:  Nov. 28 – “Walk to Bethlehem” and Dec. 19 -“Live Nativity.”

Christmas: Outreach

“The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had seen and heard.”

(Luke 2:20)

There is something about this story that make us want to sing and tell it. It is not the kind of thing you can contain or keep to yourself. So it is to this day. On Dec. 5, we all have this opportunity to reach out with an evening of caroling to others in our Faith community.

Christmas: Singing

“And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God.”  (Luke 2:13)

Music and singing are powerful parts of the Christmas story. Some of the most powerful hymns, songs, and carols are associated with Christmas. On Dec. 9, we will gather for our annual Christmas Concert.  It is a wonderful evening of music and song!

Christmas: Surprise

“And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son.” (Matthew 1:31)

Of all the ways God might reveal Himself to us, who would even imagine an infant child! And since that time God has continued to surprise us with the way He comes to us. Ever since Bethlehem, the place of children in the story of God is prominent. And so it is that we count on children to tell us this story. There are two opportunities for this: on Dec.12 we will hear the witness of our Preschool-Kindergarten students, and on Dec. 16., our 1st – 6th graders.

Christmas:  Worship

“They knelt down and paid him homage.” (Matthew 2:11)

Finally, all our preparations for Christmas culminate in worship. Like all the characters in this grand story, we give to God our thanks and praise and worship. What else can we do? There are five opportunities to worship and celebrate the birth of our Lord: Dec. 24 @ 2, 4, 6 and 11 p.m. and Dec. 25 @ 10 a.m.

Prepare yourself to meet the Lord!

In Christ,

Pastor Randy Freund

Dedication of Main Street Church

From the front page of the March 24, 1939 edition of the Hutchinson Leader.

“The new $25,000 Main Street Lutheran Church will be dedicated at services next Sunday afternoon (March 26, 1939),  beginning at 2:30 p.m.

“The church presents an imposing sight in its Main Street setting. It is built of ornamental brick, with a high steeple and tower, and ornamental stone decorating the front. The main entrance is from the west, and there is also a side entrance from the south.

“The church proper is 40 feet wide by 90 feet long, with a ceiling of more than thirty feet … The main auditorium is finished in oak and presents a striking appearance. It seats about 350, while the balcony seats about 100 more. The large beams crisscrossing each other are of fir and add greatly to the inside appearance. The altar extends across the front of the church, with the choir loft, seating 32, to the left while the pulpit is on the right.

“Discussion of the new church was begun last summer, and the cornerstone was laid on October 16, 1938.”

Faith LuthePicture of 1975 Merrill School Fireran Church Supports Hutchinson Community!

Before there was a Park Elementary, on the same site, there was the Merrill School. The building was 63 years old in 1975. On Thursday, March 21, a massive fire broke out. That fire was the largest in Hutchinson’s history in terms of loss at $2 million. The fire began in an area used for elementary physical education. From there, it spread throughout the building. The east wing, which received the most damage, housed a number of elementary classrooms. Spring break was due to start the following Tuesday but it began early. By the time break was over, the school board had worked with a number of churches in the Hutchinson area, including Faith, to hold classes in their buildings.

This is just one way that Faith Lutheran Church has been actively involved in supporting the Hutchinson community.

St. Morten’s cemetery near Heatwole. In 1889 a small Danish Church was started and shared a pastor with Main St. Lutheran. The members who donated labor in building the church were given a free plot in the cemetery. In 1931 St. Morten’s merged with Main Street Lutheran and to this day FLC maintains the cemetery. You can find a map of the plots and more information in the gathering space outside of the office. If you would be available to mow or help maintain the grounds on occasion during the summer please contact the office.

Why do pews have a divider that is not in the middle?

When the church was completed in 1939 the pews that arrived were a bit too short.

This was resolved by adding the extension to each pew that you see today.

Go back to 1956 – do you recognize this past pastor or current member of FLC?

This would be Pastor N.B. Hanson and Muriel (Rasmussen) Dobratz.

Paraphrase Theatre – Jonathan Swenson Presents

November 3, 2015 By Faith

Celebrate the Child, a one-man play featuring Christian actor and speaker Jonathan Swenson, will be performed at Faith Lutheran Church, 335 Main St. S. in Hutchinson on Wednesday, December 9th.  Written by Curt Cloninger, this combination of “characters and carols” explores the birth of Jesus through the eyes of six different people whose lives were somehow intertwined with the birth of Christ. Both entertaining and thought-provoking,the drama invites the audience to experience the Nativity in fresh and meaningful ways.

ParaphraseChild

Swenson is a graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College (B.A. in Psychology, Theater and Music, 1988) and Luther Seminary (Master’s of Divinity, 1994). New to Faith?

Building FAITH is the mission statement for Faith Lutheran Church, and it’s much more than just a slogan. You can see by all the ministries described on this website that God is Building FAITH in this church. It describes the amazing work God has done through our church through the years. It conveys our trust that God will amaze us even more in the future. It also calls all of us in this family of Faith to invest ourselves in the mission of bringing the good news of Jesus Christ to a world broken by sin. Continue Reading
