History of Faith Lutheran Church
The history of Faith Lutheran Church is an ongoing story of men, women and children who, for more than 150 years, have ministered and been ministered to through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is a story of faith and hope, of sacrifice and devotion, of death and resurrection that God continues to work in her members day by day.
In 1870, a small group of Danish immigrants, recognizing the need for spiritual nourishment and growth, formed the Hutchinson Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church. Early services were conducted in a schoolhouse and in private homes. During these formative years, a little church was built on Franklin Street which was used by Danish Lutherans, Methodists and Baptists.
As their congregation grew, the Danish Lutherans built their own church on the corner of 4th Avenue and Main Street in 1895. This structure served the church well, but it had outgrown it by 1938. That year, the old building was razed and the current sanctuary erected on the same site. In the decades to come, continued growth in membership and ministry spurred several building additions, culminating in the current large addition completed in 2010. This new building has allowed a flowering of ministries for people of all ages, as well as service to the community. More information about the church’s ministry is available on this web site.
Because of its location on Main Street, the congregation was known for many years as Main Street Lutheran, although that name was never officially adopted. In 1958, the congregation formally decided to change its name to Faith Lutheran Church.
Faith Lutheran maintains widespread support of missions in Hutchinson and around the world. The church was instrumental in forming the New Hope Mission Society to support evangelism among Muslims in southwest India and elsewhere, and Common Cup Ministries to serve those in need in our community.
Faith Lutheran’s mission statement is Building FAITH: Follow, Announce, Invite, Teach and Help. It sums up the broad scope and intentional Christian focus of the church. We pray that we may be found faithful through our ministry of word and sacrament, and all the other ministry efforts that grow out of it. We give thanks to God for the abundant gifts, talents and resources God continually provides to sustain those ministries.
Faith Lutheran is a member of Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ (LCMC), and the Augustana District within LCMC.
